The Spanish violinist and conductor (1863-1939) studied
with Monasterio, Vieuxtemps and Joachim. He taught violin at the
Madrid Conservatory, as well as the Royal College of Music in
London. He was appointed conductor of the new Madrid Symphony
in 1904. On a card he has drawn a staff and written 4 bars of
a work he identifies as "Bolero." He has signed "E.
Fernandez Arbós" followed by the date. Very attractice

AUER, Leopold. Autograph Letter Signed. 1929. see illustration
The great Hungarian violinist and pedagogue (1845-1930),
studied with Dont and Joachim. He was professor at the newly formed
Conservatory in St. Petersburg and became one of the most famous
violin teachers in Russia and the rest of the world. He has written
from New York in English to My Dear ?, "Sorry that my writing
on the Photo came out so badly. As for my pastime I try to remember
the time when I was of your age" He boldly signs " L.
Auer." Written the year before he died. (5 1/8 x 8 1/8

BAZZINI, Antonio. Autograph Musical Quotation Signed. 1888. see illustration
The Italian violinist and composer (1818-1897) had played
for Paganini when he was 18. He taught at the Milan Conservatory
from 1873 and became it's director in 1882. His most famous work
for the violin is the Ronde des lutins (Rond of the Goblins).
On an album leaf, he has drawn a staff and written three bars
of music. Signed "A. Bazzini" followed by the place
and date. Bazzini musical quotations are scarce. (6 3/8 x

BECKER, HUGO. Autograph Letter Signed. 1902.
The great German cellist (1863-1941), a student of Grützmacher
and Piatti, was not only a famous soloist, but also a fine ensemble
player, for many years a member of the Marteau-Dohnanyi-Becker
trio. He has written to the esteemed conductor, "Actually,
I would have several talented and qualified young cellists which
could meet your requirements. Yet these budding musicians want
to continue with their studies as long as possible, just like
Boris Hamburg. Therefore, I am very sorry that at the moment I
do not have a student who is ready to stand on his own feet."
Very boldly signed "Hugo Becker." (5 1/2 x 8 1/2

BETTI, Adolfo. Autograph Letter Signed.
The wonderful Italian violinist (1873-1950), was a student
of Cesar Thomson. He was the first violinist of the Flonzaley
Quartet from 1903 until it disbanded in 1929. He has written to
Dr. Keffer a letter about an appointment and about sending a package,
and signed "Adolfo Betti." (7 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches,

BLOCH, Ernest. Signed Photo. 1933. see illustration
The great Swiss-born American composer of Jewish ancestry
(1880-1959), studied the violin with Ysaye in Brussels. His most
famous work is Schelomo for cello and orchestra. He is shown 3/4
length, seated at a window, looking out into space. He has inscribed "with all my love, and signed "Ernest Bloch" followed
by the place and date. (the image is 6 3/4 x 11 inches, matted
and framed to 11 3/4 x 16 inches, a small tear at the edge of
the photo, and a small tear through the mat which goes through
the inscription, neither imperfection effects the overall impact

The American violinist (1839-1896) was also a pianist and
composer, as well as a singing teacher in the New York State Schools.

BRUCH, Max. Important Autograph Note On His Visiting Card.
The great German composer (1838-1920), whose works included
the two great violin concertos, the Scottish Fantasy, and Kol
Nidrei for cello and orchestra. He has written on his printed
visiting card a short letter to a friend, mentioning Sarasate
and Brahms, "The German Brahms treats me like dirt ["en
canaille"] and the Spaniard Sarasate loves me and carries

The noted German violinist (1891-1952), was founder of
the Busch Quartet and the Busch Trio, with his brother Hermann
on cello, and his son-in-law Rudolf Serkin on piano. He organized
the Marlboro School of Music in 1950. A wonderful scarce image
of the great violinist shown playing the violin, signed "Adolf

The French violinist (1879-1947), sudied with Lavignac
and Laforge in Paris. He was a member of the Capet quartet from
1910-1917, and a founder and director of the Societe Nouvelle
des Instruments Anciens, in which he played viola d'amore. His
collection of rare and ancient instruments are in the museum of
the Boston Symphony. He has drawn a staff and written 5 bars of
music, inscribed and signed "Henri Casadesus" with the

about a concert held for war charities at which he played the

and Hauptmann and the first performer of Mendelssohn's E minor
concerto, was the teacher of Joachim and Wilhelmj. David has written
to Esteemed Madam, "Please kindly accept the enclosed gift
as a small token of my respect...Any time, at your convenience,
I am ready to settle the capital amount." Signed "Ferdinand

The outstanding Russian cellist (1838-1889) studied with
Heinrich Schmidt and Karl Schuberth. In 1860 he was appointed
as instructor at the Leipzig Conservatory and played in the Gewandhaus
Orchestra. From 1862-1887 he was professor at the St. Petersburg
Conservatory. He was a prolific composer. He has written on a
large album leaf 4 bars for cello. He has inscribed and boldly
signed "C Davidoff" followed by the place and date. (6 x 8 inches) Very scarce. $550.00
DE BERIOT, Charles. Autograph Letter Signed. 1832. see illustration
The celebrated violinist (1802-1870), studied with Jean-Francois
Tiby and laterAndré Robberechts. He performed in public
at the age of nine. He became solo violinist to King William I
of the Netherlands, and was head of the violin faculty of the
Brussels Conservatoire from 1843-1852, when he was forced to retire
because of failing eyesight. Beriot occupies an important place
in the history of violin playing. He adapted the technical brilliance
of Paganini to the elegance of the Parisian style, modernizing
the French school, and actually developed the Franco-Belgian School.
He writes to the French tenor Pierre Begrez, "My close friend
Mr. Robberechts who sent you this letter has agreed to London''s
[request] to give a concert there. I recommend him to you as my
old violin master and absolutely known as a compatriot. His great
talent and kindness convince me that you will do for him as you
have done for me with so much obliging and friendship. This occasion
gives me the pleasure to remember myself to you and remind you
of my sincere fondness." With the integral address leaf.
Dated and signed "C De Beriot." In French.

violist who played Berlioz's Harold in Italy under the composer's
direction in 1842, was acknowledged as the greatest violin virtuoso
of his time after Paganini had died. He has inscribed this wonderful
Kriehuber lithograph to Wilhelm Speyer, the Austrian violinist,
signed it H W Ernst, and added the date. (9 ? x 11 ? inches,

The great Hungarian cellist (1882-?) was a student of Popper,
Hugo Becker and Robert Hausmann. He made his first public appearance
at the age of 7, and took the audience by storm. Afterwards, he
received many engagements, including playing at a concert conducted
by Arthur Nikisch. He made his first appearance in England in
1902. According to van der Straeten, "his technique is phenomenal
and his tone is good; in fact, he is a veritable Paganini on the
violoncello" He was the predecessor to Piatigorsky as principal
cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic. He has signed this lovely
photo, showing him head and shoulders, with a cigarette in one
hand and a book (?) in the other. Signed "Arnold Foldesy" followed by the place and date. (5 3/4 x 9 inches, damaged

a student of Kneisel. He was concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra

is shown in a half-length portrait playing the violin. He has
inscribed and signed "Joseph Fuchs" followed by the

The great Russian-American cellist (1909-1997) was a student
of Becker, Casals and Alexanian. She was a close friend of Feuermann
and Piatigorsky, and loved by all musicians. The Barber concerto
was written for her. She was one of the most important cellists
and most loved and respected musicians of the 20th century. She
is shown in this gorgeous photo holiding her cello, with the face

The great Austrian-born, American violinist (1911-1979) studied
with Pollack in Vienna and Flesch in Berlin. In 1937 he emigrated
to the US. He was concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic
from 1937-1942. In 1962 he organized the Warsaw String Quartet.
He was in the Warsaw Piano Quartet with the pianist Wladyslaw
Szpilman, about whom the 2002 movie "The Pianist" was
made. The violinist is shown head and shoulders in playing position.

GLAZOUNOV, Alexander. Signed Postcard-Size Photo with Autograph

The eminent Russian composer (1865-1936) studied with Rimsky-Korsakov,
and composed his first Symphony at the age of 16. He was a professor
of composition and orchestration at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
On the right edge of a postcard-sized head and shoulders portrait,
he has inscribed and signed "Alex. Glazounov" followed
by the date vertically along the right edge of the photo. On the
left side of the photo he has written a long one bar of music,
marked Allegro at the top and glissando at the bottom. Musical
quotations and signed photos of Glazounov are quite scarce. (3

The great Russian-American violinist (1899-1948) was a
student of Kneisel. He was concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony
from 1921-31. He played in the Bershire String Quartet, and founded
the Gordon String Quartet in 1930, leading it until 1947. He has

the Gordon String Quartet in 1930, leading it until 1947. He has

and Joachim. He introduced the Lalo concerto to Paris. He was
leader at the Bayreuth Festival. In 1893 he became de Ahna's successor
in the Joachim quartet. He excelled both as virtuoso and chamber

HARRISON, Beatrice. Autograph Musical Quotation Signed. 1924. see illustration
The wonderful English cellist (1892-1965) studied at the
Royal College of Music in London, and then with Hugo Becker. She
made her first performance as soloist with orchestra at the age
of 14, and was the winner of the prestigious Mendelssohn Prize.
On an album leaf, she has written two bars of the Dvorak Concerto,
and has signed "Beatrice Harrison." (5 ? x 7 7/8

The wonderful English violinist (1891-1959), sister of
the cellist Beatrice Harrison, was a student at the Royal College
of Music in London. She studied with Arbos, Rivarde and Auer.
At age 18, she took Kreisler's place at a Mendelssohn Festival
at Helsingfors, and in 1909 appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic.
On an album leaf, she has written the first three bars of the
Bach Chaccone, which she has identified. She has also written "Only great and good art can be truly loved." (Ruskin),
and "Forget-me-not." Boldly signed "May Harrison."

The noted American violinist (1881-1956), a pupil of Loeffler,
had played practically the entire modern violin repertoire by

did not mean he was closing his account. He continues, "...
I am just now deeply involved in charity work for my country,
Austria, which involves a heavy strain on all my resources..."
. He has signed "Fritz Kreisler." Although this letter
does not have a musical content, it is interesting to see his
devotion to his country in the aftermath of World War I. Kreisler

Philharmonic from 1917-21. He was a founder-member of the Hart
House Quartet, and taught at the Liszt Academy in Budapest from
1941-1947. He has boldly signed "Geza de Kresz" above
his printed name, and on the verso answered the question, My favorite

The great Russian-born cellist (1908-2004) was a student
of Klengel. He gave his debut recital in Berlin at the age of
16, at the encouragement of Klengel, to rave reviews. He continued
his studies with Casals and Alexanian. He was principal cellist
with the Bremen Opera Orchestra, the Prague German Opera under
Szell, and from 1936-44 was principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony.
He left the CSO to devote himself to his solo career, and made
his solo debut in America in January, 1945 with Toscanini and
the NBC Symphony. A fine photo, shown playing the cello, inscribed
and signed "Edmund Kurtz" followed by the date.

and was Konzertmeister in Weimar from 1853-55. He became professor
at the Moscow Conservatory in 1866. He writes to a dear friend
that he will be coming to Krefeld and to prepare Mr. von Beckerrath
for his concert. He's looking forward to coming to Krefeld and
will also play in Cologne and Belgium. Boldly signed "Ferdinand

Petrouchka, Le Sacre du printemps and Le Rossignol, Ravel's Daphnis
et Chloé, and Debussy's Jeux. From 1936-1952 he was the

The great Russian violinist (1908-1974) was a student of Stoliarsky,
and made his debut at the age of 6. In 1927 he appeared as soloist
in the Glazunov Concerto under the composer's direction. His name
attracted universal attention in 1937 when he won first prize
at the Ysaye Competition in Brussels. He made his first American
appearances in 1955, winning enthusiastic acclaim. He was one
of the most acclaimed violinists of the 20th century, often
compared to Heifetz and Milstein. He is shown in a close up head

Concert." Held at the Assembly Rooms on George Street in
London, the program included Sonata in due parte, Recitativo e
tre arie convariazioni (followed by the celebrated Scotch Air,
"Scots wha ha'e", and Delle Streghe, or Dance of the
Witches, all composed and performed by Signor Paganini. Also perfoming
on the program were Signora Pietralla and Pio Cianchettini.

A printed court document concerning the liquidation of
the Casino Paganini, relating to many of the events and persons
associated with it, including Mme. de San Felice, the concert
singer who had initiated the collapse of the enterprise by suing
for confiscation of the entire receipts of the 30th of January
to satisfy her unpaid fee. The event is documented in deCourcy's
Chronology (page 71). The document is an actual account of the
court proceedings, and signed by the two lawyers involved. With
an English translation, and a summary. Very rare and unique. $1000.00

The great Italian violinist (1847-1912) was a pupil of
Giorgetti at Florence. He made his debut at the age of 13. In
1874 he appeared at the Musical Union, playing the viola. For
several years he was president of the College of Violinists in
London. He excelled both as a soloist and chamber music player.
He composed a large quanity of very effective solo pieces, as
well as a tutor for violin. He toured with Rubinstein, von Bülow
and Bottesini. He has written one very long virtuoso bar which

Hilda Wiener was an artist who originally specialized in
the paintings of animals. The book, published in 1937, includes

been either a direct pupil of Sainton's or a pupil of a pupil.

The great Belgian cellist (1807-1866) studied with Platel
at the Brussels Conservatory and succeeded Platel at the conservatory.
Berlioz described him as "Paganinian." He was probably
the finest cellist of his day, praised for his intense, pure sound,
flawless intonation, and acrobatic technique. He collaborated
with Vieuxtemps and Leonard in composing duos for violin and cello.
He has written on a worn piece of ledger paper to Mr. Barbier,
"I came with my wife to have the pleasure of seeing you -
this morning. I saw the person in question who received me very
well and told me about your friendly letter. I will come to see
you soon to bring you up to date about this meeting." He
signs "F. Servais." (2 pages, in pencil, rather
messy, trimmed so that 2 letters on the 2nd page are sl. affected,

This quartet, the violinists and violist all pupils of
Sevcik, started playing together in about 1902, and in about 1904,
Sevcik said they could use his name. After World War I they started
using the name Sevcik-Lhotsky, probably because they got tired
of people asking why Sevcik wasn't in the quartet. On an album
leaf, each one of the quartet members has drawn a staff and written
several measures from the quartet repertoire, followed by their

The Italian-English violinist and composer (1857-1928)
studied with Bianchi, Cavallini, Gamba and Sivori. He was a member
of the London Trio, and a professor of violin at the Irish Royal
Academy of Music. He was an early champion of the Brahms violin
concerto, and wrote a cadenza for the work. He has written to
Mr. Hill (of Hill and Sons) that "I have seen your brother
Alfred who gave me your address and who has taken my Tourte bow
to Hanwell to rehair it." He talks about going to Boulogne
to stay with his family, and when he comes back he would like
to bring his violin "and do some music, as in the good old
time!!" Enclosed is a recital program from Dublin and typed
copies of reviews from the concerts. Fine musical association.

correspondant about his daughter (who became celebrated as an
opera singer), that she is on the verge of finishing her studies

of Chiti and Buitrago before entering the Bologna Conservatory
at the age of 14. He lated studied with Lefort. He made his American
debut in 1908, and gave the US premiers of the violin concertos
of Dohnany, Elgar and Barber. His own works include an orchestra
suite, 2 violin concertos, a string quartet, a violin sonata,
etc. He is shown seated, holding his violin and bow, and has inscribed

of Marsick at the Paris Conservatoire. He was a member of the
cellebrated trio with Alfred Cortot and Pablo Casals. In 1943
he founded the renowned Long-Thibaud competition with Marguerite
Long. He is shown seated holding his violin and bow, signed "Jacques
Thibaud" follwed by the date. He has also drawn a staff,
wrtten a very high note and a very low note, with a symbol for
a glissando between them. A unique item, one of the finest Thibaud

The great Italian violinist (1867-1955) was a student of
Massart at the Paris Conservatory, where she took 1st prize in
1880. After marrying Count Franchi-Verney in 1889, she withdrew
from the concert stage untill the autumn of 1895, when she set
out on a successful European tourincluding Russia, where her accompanist
and joint artist was Rachmaninoff. This lovely cabinet photo shows
the violinist in a long dress holding her violin and bow. She
has inscribed the verso to Francesco Tamagno, the great Italian
tenor, and signed "Teresina Franchi-Verney della Valetta
Tua" followed by the place and date. (4 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches)

She has written 2 bars from the Prelude of the Bach E Major Partita
